Magnetic Field therapy was part of the program that helped many of the mounts at the World Equestrian Games 2002. Pulsed Magnetic Field therapy (PMF) is used as part of my program prior to an event, says Doug Hannum, team therapist.
Hannum uses the Respond 4000 on the medium setting an hour-and-a-half prior to each ride. PMF therapy saves excessive muscle exhaustion that tends to occur during warm-ups such as lunging. After the ride he uses the 4000 on the low setting to relax the muscles, to settle everything down.
Hannum notes that this therapy used in conjunction with other types of therapies, such as laser, massage, or electrical stimulation, helps in the extended movements and relieves body soreness. Most of the horses at the Games did their lifetime best and dropped their scores 10 15 points. Hannum also credits the work of the rest of the support team, Steve Teichman, team farrier, and Dr. Brendan Furlong, team veterinarian.
